Venation desk

After realising the Venation bench I felt there was scope to move the design further forward and look at new methods of timber construction. Due to the the properties of timber a pattern of this nature would normally have to be executed with veneers and marquetry techniques to prevent movement issues in the future.

The Venation desk has been made from a grand Scottish Elm tree. To use solid timber with this pattern work I have resolved a method of structurally jointing the perimeter with a sliding joint at the bottom of the pattern. The sliding joint and the 1.5 mm gaps between the segments allow for any movement while retaining a structure to create the desk.

The leather desk top panel has been magnetised to allow for hidden fixings, this allows the desk to be disassembled for access, transport etc.

The grain of the Elm tree is wonderfully wild and a native favourite. It has given me great inspiration for future work incorporating a pallet of new contemporary colours.
